IBM, West Point Top List of New Projects
Advancing in Dutchess, Orange Counties
CHESTER, NY—Construction industry leaders reported that several major projects are now in the pipeline in the Hudson Valley, including nearly $3 billion of construction volume on two mega projects in Dutchess County and Orange County. Officials unveiled the projects to more than 60 leading contractors and Union officials at the annual spring meeting of the Hudson Valley Kick-Off Luncheon held yesterday, Tues., 14, at Glenmere Mansion Hotel in Orange.
Dutchess County Assistant County Executive Ron Hicks reported that IBM is moving forward with a project at its IBM complex in the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY. Representatives of the Armonk-based IBM are scheduled to appear before the Planning Department this Thursday evening to discuss its “Quantum Facility” project, which will involve the construction of a 467,450/sf Quantum Facility building, along with a 7,660/sf utility building and a 36,600/sf generator building.
To make way for the new buildings at IBM, two existing buildings would be demolished. Mr. Hicks and Todd Diorio, President of the Hudson Valley Building and Construction Trades Council, said the first phase of the project is valued up to $1 billion.
While a project labor agreement with the local Building Trades has not yet been signed, Mr. Diorio told CONSTRUCTION NEWS that IBM has assured him the project will be built with all union labor.
Mr. Diorio also noted that a private-entity concern is in the early stages of pursuing plans to build a major industrial project, valued at $1.8 billion in Orange County. He also noted that the work pipeline includes two new buildings at West Point, valued at $800 million.
Mr. Diorio also explained that organized labor and proponents of the Amazon 3.2-million/sf fulfillment center in Orange are still awaiting a court ruling on whether the controversial project, valued at $607 million in the Town of Wawayanda, can proceed.
Other guest speakers at the HV Kick-Off Luncheon included Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger, Putnam County Executive Ken Byrne, Rockland County Deputy County Executive Michael Hoblin and Orange County Deputy County Executive Harry Porr.
In addition to Mr. Diorio of the Hudson Valley Building & Construction Industry Council, Steve Reich, Co-Vice President of the Rockland Building & Construction Trades Council, gave extensive market updates on their respective territories.
Representatives of construction management were Matthew Pepe of the Building Contractors Association of Westchester & Mid-Hudson Region and Dan Depew of the Construction Contractors Association of the Hudson Valley, who also offered remarks. The program was moderated by John Cooney, Jr., Executive Director of the Construction Industry Council.
