Amazon Proposes $1B Long Island Project
Orange County Proposal Remains in Limbo
HOLLBROOK, NY—E-commerce giant Amazon is looking to build a $1-billion fulfilment center in Suffolk County, while its proposed development project in Orange County, NY remains on hold.
Newsday reports that Amazon has proposed to build two buildings on a wooded, 140-acre site at Sunrise Highway and Nicolls Road, said Brad Griggs, Amazon’s director of economic development for the Northeast United States.
“We believe in starting with our customer and meeting our customer needs. We don’t have this type of operation on Long Island. We believe that we have a network gap, not just for Long Island, but in the Northeast region,” he said.
The Holbrook development would include two connected facilities, including a 3.7 million-square-foot fulfillment center and a 450,000-square-foot “sub same-day fulfillment center,” Newsday reports.
The Amazon project in Wawayanda, projected to cost more than $600 million to develop, has sparked a host of litigation stemming from its approvals. While a court ruling favored the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals denial of a height variance, the Orange County Supreme Court recently granted summary judgment to developer Scannell Properties and dismissed the Article 78 petition challenging the Town of Wawayanda Planning Board’s later approval of a special use permit granting the height variance for the project.
A key court ruling came recently when the Orange County Supreme Court upheld the veto of Orange County Industrial Development Agency Monitor Brian Sanvidge’s veto of approximately $80 million in incentives granted by the IDA for the Amazon project.
