Westchester Population Gains in 2024-2025
Leads All New York Counties, Sets Record
WHITE PLAINS, NY—New population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show Westchester County experienced the largest numeric population increase in New York State between 2024 and 2025.
According to the newly released estimates, Westchester County’s population reached 1,015,743 residents last year, marking an increase of 6,578 people from 2024, the highest population ever recorded for the county and the largest gain of any county in New York State.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “People are choosing Westchester—not just to visit, but to live, build families and invest in their future. When we create housing opportunities and vibrant neighborhoods, people come—and they stay. This jump underscores the county’s continued growth and strength as a place to live, work and raise a family.”
Mr. Jenkins attributed the population increase to large development projects in New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers, as well as the diversity of the type of communities located in the county that offer urban and suburban lifestyles, he noted in an interview with the Journal News. Other notable population gains occurred in Suffolk County (2,760), which came in second statewide, and a pair of Hudson Valley counties—Orange (2,581) and Rockland (2,568), the Journal News reported.
Overall, Westchester County’s population is now approximately 1.1% higher than its 2020 Census count, signaling sustained growth over the past five years, county officials stated. The population increase comes at a time when many counties across New York State are experiencing declines. Recent data shows that 24 counties gained population while 38 lost residents, further highlighting Westchester’s position as a leader in regional growth.
The estimates, released as part of the Census Bureau’s annual Population and Housing Unit Estimates program, track population changes from April 1, 2020 through July 1, 2025.
