It’s National Apprenticeship Day Today To Spur Careers, Job Advancement

ALBANY— Unions and other groups are celebrating National Apprenticeship Day on April 30, today to highlight the value of apprenticeships that provide real-world experience and career preparation.

“This single-day event is a nationwide celebration that encourages employers, apprentices and related organizations to showcase the benefits of apprenticeship programs,” explained Jeff Loughlin, president of the Building & Construction Trades Council of Westchester & Putnam Counties, Inc. Mr. Loughlin is business manager of Operating Engineers Local 137, which itself operates its Apprenticeship Training Center in Montrose, NY.

In honor of National Apprenticeship Day, New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon is participating in events to highlight Registered Apprenticeships in New York State. Companies, organizations and local governments are encouraged to share information and postings of the many events that are planned statewide such as open houses, career fairs, graduations, or apprentice signing days.

John Cooney, Jr., executive director of the Construction Industry Council of Westchester & Hudson Valley, Inc., said, “Construction trades apprenticeship and training programs are a pathway to great careers. With little prior knowledge or training, an individual can set a career path that provides a solid financial future. If the individual has the will the trades can help build the skill. You can earn while you earn.”

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a nationwide celebration where ApprenticeshipUSA partners – employers, apprentices and graduates, industry representatives, labor organizations, community-based organizations, workforce partners, educational institutions, and federal, state and local government agencies host events to showcase the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeship for strengthening our economy. Apprenticeship training develops a highly skilled workforce to meet industry needs, and apprenticeships create pathways for career seekers to catapult into in-demand jobs.

The U.S. Department of Labor coordinates NAW to promote registered apprenticeship in accordance with the National Apprenticeship Act (50 Stat. 664; 29 U.S.C. 50). While National Apprenticeship Day being held today, a week-long celebration is set to resume in 2026. Organizers are encouraged to share any events that are planned or held. Email to [email protected] with the date and details of your event.

Additionally, stakeholders are encouraged to register events on the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) ApprenticeshipUSA webpage at Submit an Event:  Apprenticeship.gov.
