Lawmakers Agree to State Budget Extension
Through April 14 to Keep Operations Funded
ALBANY—New York State lawmakers returned to Albany on Tues., April 7, and passed a second extension to the state budget that will keep state operations running and funded through Tues., April 14.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers continue to debate proposed changes to the state’s 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, automobile insurance and SEQRA reforms among the key items to be addressed. The state budget deadline was April 1.
City & State, which reported the passage of the second budget extender, noted that state lawmakers are hopeful that negotiations will prevent the need for too many additional budget extenders.
“We have had many, many meetings with the leaders, literally, starting in the fall on a regular basis,” Gov. Hochul told reporters Monday. “There is certainly a lot of communication, a lot of give and take, a lot of conversations going on, which I think is really important to the process.”
New York State Assemblyman Assembly Member Al Stirpe (D-AD127) said some lawmakers are open to accepting a new Climate Law statutory deadline of 2027 rather than the 2030 deadline the governor proposed. However, Assembly Environmental Committee Chair Deborah Glick said that little movement on an agreement has taken place.
“At this juncture (there is) no agreement on anything,” Ms. Glick said in a text message to City & State. “Movement requires a bit more flexibility on (the governor’s) part.”
