The Top in-Demand Jobs In Building, Construction

Construction activity serves many masters, both as a leading economic indicator of what is occurring and as a cornerstone of economic development for what lies ahead. Four percent of the workforce in the economy is responsible for 18 percent of the annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). A new report shows the demand for skilled construction professionals is projected to surge as the number of projects and the scope of activities increase.

BLS is now expecting a significant growth in new job openings. The construction industry counted 413,000 open jobs on the last day of January, a 41% increase year over year, or 120,000 more unfilled positions, BLS data showed.  

What’s driving this huge demand are several key trends and factors including population growth, urbanization, infrastructure programs and an ever-increasing demand for pharmaceutical, data center and semiconductor builds, report EIDA, a construction management platform that serves all facets of complex construction projects for the life sciences and technology sectors. There is also an increased demand for sustainable building practices and advanced technology integration, the firm noted.

Among the top five construction job categories viewed on the rise are:

Green Construction Specialists: With green building practices on the rise, professionals are needed to implement eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems and environmentally conscious construction techniques.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) Managers: These professionals play a crucial role in enhancing collaboration and efficiency throughout the construction process. Experts are needed to manage and oversee the digital representation of a building’s physical and functional characteristics.

Construction Project Managers: Project managers are still the most important people on any successful construction project to oversee the planning, execution and completion of projects, ensuring they are on time and within budget.

Civil Engineers: The demand for skilled civil engineers is expected to grow as construction of infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, water systems and environmental protection advance as governments invest in improving and expanding infrastructure,

HVAC Technicians: With today’s increasing emphasis on energy efficiency and indoor air quality, the demand for skilled HVAC technicians is projected to grow especially in the pharma, semiconductor and data centre industries.   

Other categories leading the list of occupations in demand area:

  • Electricians serving technology and automoation;
  • Welders and Metal Fabricators essential for constructing and repairing metal structures, from bridges to pipelines to manufacturing plants and everything in between;
  • Heavy Equipment Operators performing the crucial tasks ranging from excavation to material handling on construction sites;
  • Document controllers who play a vital role in the whole lifecycle of a complex construction project. Responsibilities include controlling company and project documentation, following and improving document control procedures and ensuring all documentation meets project requirements and required standards;
  • Safety Managers and Inspectors ensure compliance with regulations and implementing safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries on construction sites. The most in demand are those with experience using safety management softwares streamlines everyday safety activities such as document management, permitting, risk assessments and method statement approval.

Adding expertise in these in-demand fields will position individuals for rewarding and stable careers in the growth spheres of building and construction.
